What you’ll do:

We are recruiting for up to 4 Part Time Trainee Mainline Train Drivers for our East Ham depot only, expected to start Late Spring/Early Summer 2021. In this job, you will be responsible for driving our passenger trains along our route during our daily Peak service. A flexible approach is required to cover a rotating shift pattern of early and late shifts. Early shifts 04.00am – 11.30am, late shifts are – 14.30pm – 21.30pm. You will be working 20hrs a week, four days out of seven, average of 5hrs per day. You must live within one hour’s travel of our East Ham depot, as you are required to get to the depot and home by your own means.

A Train Driver’s main responsibilities are typically:

  • Safety, our number one priority for all
  • Driving trains ensuring customer comfort along with punctuality
  • Drive trains taking particular account of all permissible, weather conditions, temporary and emergency speed restrictions
  • Following diagrams and schedules regarding formation and stopping patterns of trains
  • Ensure passenger safety including boarding and alighting at every station
  • Control the releasing of doors and make passenger announcements. Especially important when there are delays
  • Communicate with a team of signaller/controllers who will provide you with the essential information needed to allow safe passenger of trains
  • Train Drivers may work alone but they an integral part of our Ops family. Our train drivers are mums, dads, grandparents, sisters or brothers, all individual but all who share the same work ethic – a sound career opportunity with a good work/home-life balance.

    What it takes:

    A good Train Driver will be:

  • Able to undertake the physical requirements of the role
  • Maintain vigilance and concentration when working, particularly whilst carrying our repetitive, tiring or monotonous tasks
  • React quickly and in compliance with safety requirements to changing situation
  • Comply with procedures , rules and standards as specified in the Railway Group Standard Rule Book particularly when unsupervised or under pressure
  • Have a logical mind
  • Be approachable and a first-rate communicator

  • Things to consider:

    There are 2 stages to this recruitment campaign, the first is an all day assessment centre with our Occupational Psychologists to sit a number of Train Driver psychometrics assessments. The assessments centres will be taking place in February 2021. Candidates who meet the required pass standard will then be invited to a face to face interview with our Driver Management team.

    Any offer of employment is subject to a candidate passing the current Train Driver medical standard including (but not limited to) eyesight, hearing, ECG testing, drugs and alcohol screening, a DBS (disclosure barring system check), referencing and a right to work in the UK check. Potential candidates should also note that random drug and alcohol tests may be performed at any time throughout your career at c2c.

  • You must be aged 21 or over upon application.
  • Must not have failed any Train Driver assessments in the last 6 months nor have failed any Train Driver assessments more than twice.
  • Our trainees start with a structured 9-11 month training programme which includes both classroom and practical content before being assessed as a competent part-time trainee Train driver.
  • A probation period of 6 months will begin once competent on c2c routes.
  • Due to the intensity of the training programme, we are unable to guarantee any annual leave during the first five months of training.

  • Salary during the training period is £28,304.40. This rises to £35,161.00 once qualified.
