Chief of Staff to the Chief of Defence People

Defence People is one of the biggest Departments in central Government: six 2* directorates, a 3* arm’s length body (the Service Complaints Ombudsman), c600 staff spread across four locations and over 470 work strands running as at Sep 19. It was recently described by the Permanent Secretary as having to deliver the most complex and critical portfolio in Defence for the benefit of its serving workforce of 140k military personnel and 57k civil servants, and the ex-serving community made up of over 2m Veterans.

Job description

• Work with CDP and the 2* directors to set strategic priorities and identify metrics for success. Research, benchmark, analyse data, and make recommendations. Propose the creation of new systems and processes to streamline operations.
• Chair the 1* Defence People Management Group to prioritise, direct and coordinate day to day business across the organisation, freeing up CDP and the 2* Leadership Team to focus on strategic level transformation.
• In conjunction with Head Strategy, define, refine and articulate the Defence People Risk environment at both Defence Board and business level.
• Strategically manage CDP’s time: working with the Military Assistant, identify internal and external opportunities and assess their fit against priorities.

Responsibilities

Essential
• An outstanding ability and track record of building and maintaining relationships across organisational boundaries, and evidence of using these relationships to benefit your organisation
• A track record of building and leading high-performing teams, often without formal authority
• Experience of working at a relevant scale, in a dynamic, high pressured environment
• Experience of successfully working in a formal HR role and/or experience of people policy issues
• Experience of budgetary management
