Chief Scientific Adviser

In an increasingly uncertain world, the Ministry of Defence has a critical role to play in delivering Government’s most important role – to defend our country and keep our people safe. The threats to national safety and security are evolving rapidly, becoming more complex and diverse in nature. We must adapt and innovate to stay ahead. In 2015, the Ministry of Defence set out plans for stronger defence with more ships, more aircraft, more troops at readiness and better equipment for Special Forces. A Modernising Defence Programme has also been launched, which will ensure that the UK’s Armed Forces can deliver better military capability in a sustainable and affordable way.

The role of Chief Scientific Adviser is one of the most important and influential roles within the Ministry of Defence. As the pace of scientific development accelerates, the Chief Scientific Adviser will be instrumental in providing high quality scientific advice to Ministers and other senior officials, whilst supporting decisions on military operations and future equipment acquisitions and assisting the delivery of future battle-winning technologies. The Chief Scientific Adviser brings together specialised defence areas of chemical, biological, radiological and missile defence and promotes technology-led modernisation across a range of areas including Autonomous Systems, Cyber Deterrence, Artificial Intelligence, Big Data, Space Technology and Synthetic Environments.

The successful candidate will have a first class reputation in science or engineering demonstrated by international recognition, Fellowship of the Royal Society, Royal Academy of Engineering or equivalent, and a strong record of significant research output and application. S/he will need to demonstrate the ability to exercise sound judgement and decision making based on evidence and produce results to time and budget, operating under a challenging set of circumstances. Strong interpersonal, influencing and communication skills are essential.
