Deputy Director for Retail, Services and Sectors Hub

As the Deputy Director for Retail, Services and Sectors Hub, you will be the Whitehall sector lead for Retail, Consumer Goods and Professional Business Services, provide policy leadership for the Post Office, and continue developing the Sectors Briefing Hub to be a centre of excellence supporting BEIS Ministers and No 10.

You work closely with Ministers and CEOs across these sectors to support UK investment, lead the development of policy to support their long-term success through the Industrial Strategy, and provide a strong business voice into work on EU Exit and developing trade deals with the rest of the world. You will also be one of the few people in BEIS working in detail on both the goods and services elements of EU Exit and be in an ideal position to use your insights to help shape policy development.

We are looking for someone who has the ability to influence and negotiate at the most senior levels, build a strong, high performing and resilient team, and establish an effective network of professional relationships across Whitehall and amongst senior industry executives to take forward this exciting agenda.

Key Objectives

This is an exciting role with responsibility for:

• delivering an ambitious Industrial Strategy across key sectors of the economy: Professional Business Services, Retail and Consumer Goods;

• engaging with specific companies to manage economic events;

• providing a strong business voice for your sectors into negotiations on EU Exit and Rest of World trade;

• developing a policy framework for the Post Office to support its long-term success;

• developing the Sectors Briefing Hub to become a centre of excellence supporting BEIS Ministers on Parliamentary business and correspondence.

You will be a strong leader with proven experience of motivating and developing teams to respond to an increasingly demanding Ministerial and Parliamentary agenda. You will also be a skilled stakeholder manager adept at building productive relationships with external stakeholders and colleagues across Whitehall, and accustomed to operating at the highest levels i.e. with industry leaders, Ministers and No.10.

You will lead four G6 led teams, consisting of approximately 30 people in total.

Person Specification

The successful candidate must be able to demonstrate:

• Excellent leadership skills capable of motivating and inspiring diverse teams through periods of ambiguity;

• Outstanding communication and influencing skills able to build effective relationships at senior levels;

• A self-starter with strong personal impact, able to work across organisational boundaries with a wide range of stakeholders in a complex political environment;

• The ability to lead and manage service delivery, identifying and implementing innovative improvements to support delivery of key Departmental objectives.

• The ability to think creatively to develop innovative solutions and approaches to complex issues.
