The role and organisation
The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) is the government department responsible for safeguarding our natural environment, supporting our world-leading food and farming industry, and sustaining a thriving rural economy.

The role of Director General Strategy and Change is a varied and challenging senior leadership role right at the heart of delivering our ambitious agenda. You will be a key adviser to the Permanent Secretary and Ministers and play a leading role in ensuring the Department is able to respond effectively to support Defra’s agenda by building organisational capability and driving performance and delivery across a range of professional disciplines. You will lead an integrated model of our core functions, providing functional support for our major delivery bodies, as well as the core department.
As a key member of the senior leadership team, you will provide collective leadership across the Defra Group as we build on our reputation for being a dynamic department that attracts talented people who are passionate about our vision.
