About the job
The Ministry of Defence (MOD) commands UK military operations worldwide and provides the necessary enablers such as infrastructure, equipment, logistics and medical services. We are acutely aware of the duty of care we owe our people, the public and the environment and therefore we take our HS&EP obligations extremely seriously.
In order to strengthen the Head Office governance of this critically important area, a new Director role has been created to lead the Head Office’s oversight of HS&EP performance and risk.
About the role
You will lead a central team responsible for developing best practice and wider developments in Defence, society and law – coordinating and driving forward the work of the Defence Safety and Environment Committee (DSEC), Defence’s top-level HS&EP forum, chaired by the Permanent Secretary.
The post holder will be ultimately responsible for developing and delivering HS&EP policies and creating and maintaining a "best in class" safety culture within the MOD.
To do this you will need to extensively engage and work with senior leadership across the MOD, including the Armed Forces; maintaining a Head Office awareness of issues, and, where necessary, acting to address serious HS&EP risks and issues across Defence.
You will also develop and deliver an external engagement strategy including engagement with other government departments, the Health and Safety Executive, and other statutory bodies; and other allies to share best practice on HS&EP governance.
You will be adaptable, dynamic and proactive with excellent communication skills and the ability to win confidence and make an impact at the highest-level including with Ministers, and senior military and civilian staff, in a fast moving, high profile and demanding environment.
Most importantly you will be able to demonstrate extensive experience at a senior leadership level delivering HS&EP improvements in large-scale and complex organisations through advances in policies, systems and culture.
