What is Housing First?
Housing First is based around the ethos that housing is a human right and differs from traditional supported housing and homelessness provision that use places a number of conditions on people to prove that they are ready for independent housing
The model was first developed in New York in 1992. It has since been widely adopted in the USA and become central to the national homelessness strategies in Canada, Denmark, Finland and France, demonstrating widespread success.
The approach is currently growing in popularity in the UK; in 2016 Housing First England developed and published the principles for Housing First to inform the commissioning, design and delivery of services in this country.
