Trade and investment have been central to the success of the UK economy and will be even more so in future. By using our range of tools to reduce barriers to trade and investment we can encourage flows of goods, services and capital between countries; make it easier for firms to export, import and invest; stimulate innovation, competition and productivity gains; and improve living standards by offering consumers a wider and more affordable range of products. By securing global prosperity, international trade and investment activities also contribute to global stability and security, support economic development and poverty reduction in developing countries and enhance the UK’s global influence.

The Department for International Trade’s Trade Policy Group provides the capability to deliver an independent trade policy for the UK, which includes focusing on leading the cross Whitehall effort to ensure a coherent trade policy; delivering a full range of trade negotiations with the ‘Rest of the World’, leading on all bilateral trade relations, export licensing and the cross-Government Trade Profession.
