HR Director

The Government Digital Service HR Director is a key strategic leadership role in one of the Cabinet Office’s transformational business areas.

Working collaboratively with departments, GDS harnesses the power of technology to do things digitally and deliver public services that are simpler, clearer and faster to use and more efficient to run.

As a member of the GDS Management Team and reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, Fiona Deans, you will work with them to deliver the business strategy by:

• Developing the delivery model for the organisation and the organisational capability to make it work;
• Delivering business change;
• Delivering the People Strategy and its underpinning plan for GDS staff;
• Setting the strategy to attract, develop and motivate talented people to achieve;
• Embedding the people agenda at all levels of the organisation.

You will also be expected to play an active role in Civil Service HR across government and will have a reporting line to Carol Barnard, the HR Director for Cabinet Office as Head of HR profession.

Some of the key responsibilities are:

• Lead on a broad range of people related work streams to ensure GDS has an engaged, skilled and flexible workforce and the organisational capability to deliver it's strategic objectives as set out in the Functional Plan;
• Be the Director General, Government Digital Services’ trusted advisor on people and organisational issues, providing challenge and support and develop the capability of the senior team;
• Play a full part as a senior member of Civil Service HR community contributing to its development as a profession;
• To set the People Strategy for GDS and lead its implementation across geographically dispersed sites;
• Drive thinking on how to create an inclusive culture to develop the organisational capabilities we need to realise our ambition and enable GDS to be a great place to work;
• Together with the Chief Operating Officer, shape transformative change across GDS to build, develop and deliver the strategic capabilities to meet its ambition.

Person Specification

To be successful in this role you will be an outstanding leader capable of balancing both strategic and operational HR priorities and acting as an advocate for change.
