Position Summary

We have an opportunity here in York for an R&D Associate Scientist to join our Food Chemistry team, focussing on Lipid Science.  This will be a 2 year Fixed Term Contract, with a view to other opportunities becoming available.  This is a great opportunity to learn through experience, mentoring and training.

 As a R&D Associate Scientist, you will establish and build competence in product/process/technology systems development (according to project briefs and stage gates in New Product Development) by applying functional knowledge, skills and experience to support product innovation and renovation teams from inception through industrialization.

 You will also be involved in supporting teams in break-through products and ensuring food safety, regulatory compliance, (NHW, 60/40+), on time launch and within cost limits.

A day in the life of...


Propose and deliver on-time technical and scientific support in projects. Build knowledge and contribute to business related project activities with initiative. Present results/methods in written and oral form to interested parties or visitors. You will also be required to contribute to the future scientific strategy in your area.  This will require working both with business partners and with scientific experts in the world of lipids (within Nestlé and in academia).


Build and document knowledge about latest methods, trends, insights and developments in relevant field of activity. Propose new ideas/activities/methods to PTC/R&DC, SBUs and Operations. Integrate basic knowledge (or knowledge from other fields) in the interpretation of the results.


Basic understanding of Scientific, Technology, Quality and Safety and Environment knowledge. Develop related tools and competencies in the domain of activity. Actively support expert network to promote cross-fertilization between different sites (R&D, Org. Units).

What will make you successful 

We’re looking for candidates with a real passion for Food Manufacturing and NPD.  We will offer training and support in this role, but we are looking for someone with the following skills and experience:

  • Degree level in the related scientific field (preferably Food Science)
  • Knowledge of quality, safety and hygiene requirements
  • Basic R&D or/and operating/factory experience
  • Exposure in different project and support activities of an organization
  • Focus on customers and consumers
  • Problem solving, Solution finding
  • Strong written and oral communication skills (including presentations)
  • Good interpersonal/teamwork skills and a good sense of business/technical interrelationships
