Job Description

The main duties of the post will include:

  1. The post holder will work directly with the Security Co-Ordinator in assisting with the day to day operation of security services is provided 24/7 across Loughton Campus. This includes all areas of business activities that are offered within the service and university.

  1. To undertake a wide range of safety, welfare, security, physical Intervention, first-aid and car parking duties both within the University Campus and externally to University owned and administered properties.

  1. The role will take responsibility for assisting in the supervision of teams of Security Officers working within the University. Taking responsibility of their team of 4 officers and in the absence of the Security Co-Ordinator act up when required. They will be assisted in the absence of the Co-Ordinator by the Deputy Head of Security & Campus Safety.

  1. To assist the Security management team with administration duties.

  1. To assist with in house training to all new Security Officers joining the team with familiarisation training, and assist the Security Co-Ordinator in the coaching, training and development of the Security Officers in the team.

  1. To assist the Security Management team in creating a customer led culture amongst staff, students and the public. To act as a role model for Security Officers, to ensure that a professional approach is maintained when dealing with staff, students, visitors, and colleagues.

  1. To encourage a sense of common purpose, a team approach, and a professional ethos among all officers within the team. To proactively demonstrate shared values and a commitment to delivering a high standard of service and support to a diverse group of customers.

  1. This is a developmental role with a view to further progression within the section, and an essential link between the Management team and Security officers.
  • To assist with and supervise and undertake Security Desk functions located at Loughton, and provide information and general assistance to staff, students and members of the public using University premises and facilities.
  • To ensure staff resources are adequate at all times at the Security Desks and provide CCTV, fire alarm panel and intercom monitoring. Act as shift control using radio communications, and input data into I.T. software applications and databases.
  • To, review incoming telephone calls to the University out of office hours and ensure security team response is appropriate and risk based.
  • To assist with the supervision, training and development of the security team ensuring in conjunction with the Security Co-Ordinator that services provided are professional and customer focussed at all times.
  • To assist with and provide a corporate "Front of House Service" representative of the University of Essex.
  • To ensure the security team develop a good knowledge of campus services and facilities in order to correctly advise staff, students and visitors.
  • With regards to Loughton Campus buildings provide external security relevant to the buildings as directed.
  • To liaise with other departments (e.g. Accommodation Office and the Residents' Support Network) to support students and staff.
  • To respond to student and staff enquiries.
  • To respond as appropriate to complaints in accommodation- e.g. noise complaints, unsocial behaviour.
  • To assist the Security Co-Ordinator, in advising the Security Officers in dealing with, and taking responsibility for those incidents that have been escalated.
  • To assist with the management of systems so as to provide effective customer focussed services including programming of fobs, door entry, Key cards and door re-programming in accommodation buildings and such other buildings as directed.
  • In conjunction with others provide basic electrical investigation of trip switch failure.

  • To provide a security service and, when out of hours being the lead for security services, ensure the quality and efficiency of the security service to the University, safeguarding the fabric of the University and property owned, used by, or entrusted to the University.
  • To ensure the safety, well-being and convenience of users of, and visitors to, the University premises.
  • To assist the Security Co-Ordinator, to ensure the safety and welfare of the security team under their responsibility.
  • Assist with others the provision of a security service to the University, safeguarding the fabric of the University and property owned, used by, or entrusted to the University.
  • To manage with others and assist in ensuring the safety, well-being and convenience of students, staff, business users and visitors to the University premises.
  • To secure internally and externally across the four buildings immediately in the vicinity of University premises at Loughton: locking and unlocking buildings, setting and checking alarms.
  • To assist in the management and ensure correct utilisation of approved procedures and techniques in a conflict situation to protect students or staff when necessary.
  • Ensure support to University Departments and staff on large events including Graduation Week, Arrivals Day, Applicant Days, Open Days, and UCAS Events at University premises and campus sites.
