Your new role

National Highways have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Design Engineer to join our Developments team in the Midlands as part of our Operations Directorate.

This role will require providing an engineering opinion at planning application stage, with more thorough assessment/input being required following planning approval; whereby Technical Approval of the associated mitigation works will be required. Technical Approval follows a two part process.

You will be required to drive as part of your role, and you will need to have a full clean driving licence to be considered for this position

What you'll be leading on

  • Technical Approval Part 1 - To confidently articulate with key stakeholders verbally whilst providing advice and direction to help shape the design from the technical compliance, buildability, durability and maintainability perspectives; but with due cognisance of the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015;
  • Technical Approval Part 2 - Produce meticulous, unambiguous written technical commentary against finalised detailed design proposals using the DMRB and MCHW, along with Statutory Instruments, advisory sources and other documentation as appropriate. Consideration again to be given to the buildability, maintainability and durability of permanent works proposals;
  • Liaison with Operations "Engineering Team Managers" to discuss proposals from both the technical compliance and future maintenance perspectives and recording the opinions obtained;
  • Liaison with other National Highways Directorates as and when required i.e. Safety Engineering and Standards;
  • Developing and maintaining professional relationships with project promoters and their project team, whilst also managing expectations;
  • Meeting with project promoters and/or project team members to discuss matters arising from the overall assessment process;

To be successful

  • Higher Degree or Degree in Civil Engineering or other appropriate qualification associated with Highway Design;
  • Professionally qualified to Chartered or Incorporated status with ICE or equivalent, or actively working towards;
  • A demonstrable working knowledge of the current DMRB, the MCHW, CHE Memos, Statutory Instruments, British Standards, and the like;
  • Experienced in the design and/or assessment of those individual elements which collectively form the Strategic Road Network;
  • Considerable experience of working within a Civil Engineering and/or Highway Design environment..
